Usage notes

[edit]
  • While -இல் (-il) is usually used with அஃறிணை (aḥṟiṇai) (irrational) nouns, -இடம் (-iṭam) is usually used with உயர்திணை (uyartiṇai) (rational) nouns.
  • Additionally, while -இல் (-il) conveys a sense of location or being, -இடம் (-iṭam) generally denotes possession or interaction (see examples above).
  • This suffix is fully replaced in Spoken Tamil by கிட்ட (kiṭṭa), which has the same usage.
