From an unknown non-Indo-European source. Cognates include Balto-Slavic *werˀź-, *wirˀź- (whence Lithuanian vìržis (heather), Latvian vir̂zis (heather), Slavic *vȇrsъ, *vȇrskъ) and Ancient Greek ἐρείκη (ereíkē, heather).[1][2][3][4]
