Proto-West Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *swīgen- (“to be silent”), of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *swī-k-, from *swī- (“to weaken, fade”), compared to *swībaną (“to finish, cease”) and Ancient Greek σιωπή (siōpḗ, “silence”),[1], but this is rejected by Kroonen and Beekes as formally impossible.[2][3]
