First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 벌에 (Yale: pelGey).
The fricative <G> implies a previous *k, which survives in dialectal forms such as Gyeongsang 벌게이 (beolgei).
