Possibly from either:
- Persian پلپل (pilpil),[1] from Sanskrit पिप्पली (pippalī, “long pepper”), or
- Aramaic [script needed] (pilpāl, “small round thing, peppercorn”) derived from [script needed] (palpēl, “to be round, roll”).[2][3]
