Spanish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain per Coromines & Pascual.[1] Corriente sees in it a borrowing from a Mozarabic *šalqassún, assimilated variant of an older *šalqastún, from Latin salicastrum (“wild vine”) + -ōnem (augmentative ending).[2] For the loss of the initial sibilant, he points to Valencian alcorroc < Arabic شَقَرَّاق (šaqarrāq, “common roller bird”).[3][n 1] If he is right, that would make arcazón a doublet of jaguarzo (“rockrose”) and sargazo (“gulfweed”).
Noun
[edit]arcazón m (plural arcazones)
