Proto-Slavic
Etymology
See *oťutiti (“to feel, to perceive”) for etymology. Note that that verb is built off of Proto-Slavic *jut- (full grade), whereas this verb is built off of Proto-Slavic *jьt- (zero grade of the same root). If Proto-Slavic *jut- is ultimately connected with Sanskrit वत् (vat, “to get acquainted with”) (see the discussion under *otjutiti), the *j- in *jьt- must be borrowed from the full grade (per Derksen).
