From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śáruṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćáruš, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱérus (“pointed stick, arrow, sword”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌿𐍃 (hairus), Old Norse hjǫrr, Old English heoru.
