Etymology
Formally identical with Thracian βóλινθος (vólinthos, “bull”)[1], from a Proto-Albanian *bōlna. Phonetically, a borrowing from Byzantine Greek βούβαλος (boúbalos);[2] (cf. Latin būbalus, both from Ancient Greek βούβαλος (boúbalos)), is also possible.
