Origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerd-, *(s)kert- (short), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut). Cognate with Latin curtus (shortened, incomplete), Proto-Slavic *kortъkъ (short).
