Etymology

Borrowed from an Indo-Iranian source, ultimately either from the Bactria-Margiana subtrate or Proto-Indo-European *is- (“clay, dough”). Compare Sanskrit इष्टका (iṣṭakā) and Persian خشت, both meaning "brick". Possibly related to iścake (“dirt, earth”), if that term is also a borrowing from Indo-Iranian.
