Inherited from Byzantine Greek νύχτα (núkhta), form of νύκτα (núkta) from Ancient Greek νύξ (núx), as in the accusative singular νύκτα (núkta),[1][2] from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts.

Cognate with Mariupol Greek ны́хта (nýxta).
