From Middle Persian ʾlgwkʾn' (argawān, “purple”), ultimately from Akkadian 𒅈𒂵𒌋𒌋𒉡 / 𒋠𒍝𒆳𒋛𒀀 (argamannu, argawannu, “tribute; purple (of textile)”), probably via Aramaic.
