Etymology
From Proto-Norse *Aiwa-rikiaʀ (literally “ever ruler”) (compare Gothic *𐌰𐌹𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (*aiwareiks)), or *Aina-rikiaʀ (literally “one ruler”). *Aiwa- is related to Proto-Germanic *aiwaz (“long time”), cognate to Latin aevum (“life, lifetime”). *Aina- stems from Proto-Germanic *ainaz (“one”) and is cognate to Latin ūnus (“one”). The second part, *-rikiaʀ stems from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz, cognate to Latin rēx (“king”).
