Etymology

From Proto-Norse *Aiwa-rikiaʀ (literally ever ruler) (compare Gothic *𐌰𐌹𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (*aiwareiks)), or *Aina-rikiaʀ (literally one ruler). *Aiwa- is related to Proto-Germanic *aiwaz (long time), cognate to Latin aevum (life, lifetime). *Aina- stems from Proto-Germanic *ainaz (one) and is cognate to Latin ūnus (one). The second part, *-rikiaʀ stems from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz, cognate to Latin rēx (king).
