liicht
Luxembourgish
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle High German līht, from Old High German līhti, from Proto-West Germanic *lį̄ht.
Cognate with German leicht, Dutch/Low German licht, English light. As to the vocalism: In an early development long vowels before -[c]ht were regularly shortened (as they have been in Dutch and Low German). Later, in a converse step, Luxembourgish lengthened all vowels in the same position (cf. Gesiicht with an originally short vowel). Since the diphthongisation of old -ī-, -iu-, -ū- occurred at some point between the said shortening and lengthening, this diphthongisation was ‟skipped” in old -īht, -iuht, -ūht (cf. also fiicht from fūhti).
