Inherited from the mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἐλευτεριά (eleuteriá)/ἐλευθεριά (eleutheriá)[1], from Ancient Greek ἐλευθερία (eleuthería) with [fθ] > [ft] and synizesis.[2] Doublet of ελευθερία (elefthería).
