From Old Spanish almosna, from Vulgar Latin *alemosyna, from Late Latin eleēmosyna (“alms”) (compare French aumône, Italian elemosina, Portuguese esmola), from Ancient Greek ἐλεημοσύνη (eleēmosúnē, “pity, mercy”), from ἐλεήμων (eleḗmōn, “pitiful, merciful”). Cognate with English alms.
