From Medieval Latin tarantula (wolf spider), from Italian tarantola, from Taranto (Taranto (city in Italy where wolf spiders are frequently found)), from Latin Tarentum, from Ancient Greek Τάρας (Táras) (genitive singular Τάραντος), possibly from Illyrian *darandos (oak).
