From Proto-Indo-European *mléd-u-s ~ *ml̥d-éw-s[1], from *meld-. Cognate with Ancient Greek βλαδύς (bladús), Latin mollis, Proto-Germanic *mildijaz, Proto-Slavic *moldъ, Old Armenian մեղկ (mełk).
