Ancient Greek

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂éristos (fittest, most fitting, most suitable), the superlative of *h₂er- (to fit, be suitable). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (arra-, wash), Tocharian A yär- (wash).
