Proto-Finnic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly a substrate loan from the pre-Finnic languages of the Baltic. A Germanic origin has been proposed, based on dialectal Norwegian Bokmål must (steam, fume, mist),[1] but this etymology must be rejected, as the proposed Norwegian word appears to be a variant of a dialectal musk (cognate with dialectal Swedish musk, Icelandic musk, probably from Proto-Germanic *muskiz) inspired by most, a Latin loanword (ultimately from Latin mustum).[2]

Adjective[edit]

*musta
