From earlier *hunhruz, from Proto-Indo-European *kank-, *kenk- (to burn, dry, pain, desire, hunger, thirst). Cognate with Lithuanian kenkti (to damage, blight), Sanskrit काङ्क्षति (kāṅkṣati, he wishes, desires).
