[edit]From earlier *hunhruz, from Proto-Indo-European *kank-, *kenk- (“to burn, dry, pain, desire, hunger, thirst”). Cognate with Lithuanian kenkti (“to damage, blight”), Sanskrit काङ्क्षति (kāṅkṣati, “he wishes, desires”).
