From *mōdrijaz (of a mother, maternal, adj), and/or *méh₂treh₂ (mother's sister), from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr.

Cognate with Cornish modrep (maternal aunt), Welsh modryb (maternal aunt), Ancient Greek μήτριος (mḗtrios, motherly, maternal), Albanian motër (sister).
