From Pre-Germanic *sn̥tér or *sn̥Htér, from Proto-Indo-European *sen-, *senH-. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄτερ (áter, apart from, without). Compare Sanskrit सनुतर् (sanutar, apart from).
