Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *anglis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óngʷl̥(charcoal). Cognate with Latvian ogle, ùogle, Lithuanian anglìs, Sanskrit अङ्गार(áṅgāra) and Old Armenian ածուխ(acux).

The PIE noun, a consonant-stem (whence later i-stem and o-stem derivations in the daughters), was likely a derivative of *h₁n̥gʷnis(fire), whence also Proto-Slavic *ognjь.
