[edit]Ellipsis of Béarla gallda (“foreign speech”) from béarla (“speech, language”), from Old Irish bélrae, from bél (“mouth”).[1][2] Compare Scottish Gaelic Beurla Ghallta, and the use of English Bahasa, originally simply meant "language".
