Etymology[edit]

Possibly a clipping of Hammarbaj /-baj/, an English pronunciation of Hammarby /-bʏ~byː/, coined by Hammarby ice hockey player Stig Emanuel ”Stickan” Andersson in 1946 on a tour to England and Scotland, and then suffixed with the definite ending -en.
