Etymology

[edit]

From the name of composer Béla Bartók. There is an indication for the Celli and Double Basses in the 3rd mvt. of Gustave Mahler's 7th Symphony: which states: "so stark anreissen, das die saiten an das holz schlagen" (Pull so hard that the strings hit the wood). Mahler lived before Bartok, so this snap effect is falsely attributed to Bartok.
