Compound Brand (conflagration, arson) +‎ chatz (treasure). Attested in Middle High German as brantschaz.

  1. the exaction of tribute from a city under the threat of setting fire to it; sum paid by a city in wartime to avoid looting and pillaging (Grimm: exactio tributi sub incendii comminatione)
