Old Norse ija-stem nouns.
These nouns are masculine or neuter, typically with the following endings:
- in the nominative singular: when masculine, -ir; when neuter, -i;
- in the genitive singular: -is or sometimes -ar;
- in the nominative plural: when masculine, -ar; when neuter, -i.
The stem classes are named from the perspective of Proto-Germanic and may not still be visible in Old Norse inflections. This class derives from Proto-Germanic a-stems ending in ij after a heavy root. As a result, the stem has i-umlaut throughout.
