Category talk:Hungarian verbs prefixed with föl-
@Panda10 I think we should get rid of this category since föl- is nothing but an alternative form of fel- and all existing verbs (alternative forms) prefixed with föl- should be stored at fel-. I suggest that for the few verbs currently in this category, we should use the alternative display form fel-, like this: {{af|hu|fel-|alt1=föl-|becsül|pos=verb}}. What do you think? (The alphabetical ordering should remain the same since these forms are sorted by the main verb stem in the category of a given prefix, so felbecsül should be immediately followed by fölbecsül.) - @Adam78 I'm uncertain. The idea sounds good on its own but it might be confusing for language learners. Maybe ask others who are learning the language? Panda10 (talk) 21:21, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
@Panda10 I remember a similar question was posed in connection with categories with derivational suffixes like -ság/-ség and you had the same concern. I think this case is different because the current situation may be misleading for language learners, since föl- forms are so secondary that they're not even listed on their own in dictionaries; many of these forms sound a little folksy. I can't imagine this change would cause a bigger confusion than the current situation does. Of course, I'd never suggest merging words like kerít and körít or felé and fölé, actually different in meaning. But this current föl- category suggests that it's an entity on its own, which it is not… Adam78 (talk) 21:34, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Adam78 These verbs are used, both in the spoken and the written language. So they are valid entities. I might even say the same word sometimes with e, other times with ö. We don't have to copy the methods of printed dictionaries. We should take advantage of the unlimited space options provided by this online version. What if we add a comment to Category:Hungarian verbs prefixed with föl- to explain it? Panda10 (talk) 21:49, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
