Etymology[edit]
From Kannada ದಕ್ಷಿಣ (dakṣiṇa, “south”) + ಕನ್ನಡ (kannaḍa, “Kannada”), presumably a translation of the older name for the region, South Canara.

- A district in southwestern India. Mangalore is its chief city and administrative headquarters.
