Etymology
[edit]From the oblique cases of Old English Denemearc; compare Dene lawe and Denelond.
Especially in Northern Middle English, the first element is sometimes remodelled on Dane (“Dane”), possibly due to the influence of Old Norse Danmǫrk (however, the East Saxon form Danmark reflects the local development of Denemearc). Contrastingly, the second element is rebuilt on marche in Southern Middle English, perhaps on the model of Old French Danemarche, Denemarche.
