Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish Etlatongo, from a Nahuan language (equivalent to Classical Nahuatl *Etlāntōnco (literally little place of beans)), a partial calque from a Mixtec language (cf. Teposcolula Mixtec Yucunduchi (literally mountain of beans)). The diminutive suffix -tōnco was added to distinguish it from Etlān (Etla, another town about 55 km away).
