[edit]From Old High German galgo, from Proto-Germanic *galgô (“rod; beam; gallows”). Cognate with German Galgen, Plautdietsch Gaulj, Dutch galg, English gallow, Icelandic gálgi, Swedish galge, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌻𐌲𐌰 (galga).
