Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 耶穌教, composed of 耶穌 (Jesus) and (religion), from Japanese 耶蘇教 (Yasokyō). Used in early Japanese documents for "Christianity", with an alternative form 耶蘇宗 (Yasoshū, literally Jesus sect). In Chinese, it means "Protestantism" specifically. For the spelling with <gi>, see Gia Tô.
