Etymology

From Latin Hebudes or Haebudes, with -u likely turned to -ri by scribal error. Earlier origin unknown. Compare Ancient Greek Ἕβουδαι (Héboudai), islands mentioned by Ptolemy and Pliny, likely the Hebrides.
