Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Two distinct origins in Western and Eastern Finland:[1]
- In eastern Finland (Karelia), from Karelian vernacular forms of Ancient Greek Ὑπάτιος (Hupátios), Ancient Greek Ἱππόλυτος (Hippólutos) and Ancient Greek Ἄρχιππος (Árkhippos) (perhaps at least in part through Russian).
- In Western Finland (South Ostrobothnia), possibly from the Middle Low German given name Hibbe, Hippe, Hippo.
