Faroese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Derived by skerping from the earlier form Jóan (which is still in use), from Latin Iōannēs, Iōhannēs, from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yōḥānān), perhaps contracted from a former יְהוֹחָנָן (Yəhōḥānān, God is gracious).
