Older, Verschärfung-less form of Jógvan, from Latin Iōhannēs (variant of Iōannēs), from Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yōḥānān), perhaps contracted from a former יְהוֹחָנָן (Yəhōḥānān, God is gracious).
