Etymology

From Proto-Brythonic *kömroɣ (compatriot), from Proto-Celtic *kom-mrogis. By surface analysis, kes- +‎ bro (country). Cognate with Welsh Cymru and Cumbric *Cumbri (whence English Cumbria). Doublet of Kembro (Welshman).
