Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

kuhmo- +‎ -inen. The initial component has been explained in two ways: by derivation from kuhmu (thus "hill"), or, more likely, akin to kumottaa, kuumottaa (to loom, be barely vislble). As the name has generally been associated with high points of elevation, the "looming" would have referred to terrain, or alternatively to beacons (signal fires).[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkuhmoi̯nen/, [ˈkuxmo̞i̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -uhmoinen
  • Syllabification(key): Kuh‧moi‧nen

Proper noun[edit]

Declension[edit]

The internal locative cases (inessive, illative and elative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Kuhmoinen" is Kuhmoisissa. Note that the inflected forms are formed as if they were plural.
