Luxembourgish

Pronunciation

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Inherited from Middle High German līche, from Old High German līh, from Proto-West Germanic *līk, from Proto-Germanic *līką, from Proto-Indo-European *leyg-.

    Noun

    [edit]

    Läich f (plural Läichen)

    1. corpse, dead body

    Etymology 2

    [edit]

Borrowed from German Laich, from Middle High German leich. Formally adapted to etymology 1 because the German word is homophonous with Leiche (but for the final -e). If it had been inherited, the Luxembourgish form would be *Leech. Compare similarly Säit (string).

    Noun

    [edit]

    Läich m (uncountable)

    1. spawn
      Synonym: (native term) Bruck
