Etymology[edit]

First recorded in Brazil in the 1980s. Rendering of English Michael, having become popular due Michael Jackson’s fame. The ending in -on is probably due to the nasalization of the final original diphthong, pronounced in Brazilian Portuguese as /ow/, i.e. /ˈmaj.kow/ > [ˈmaj.kõw̃].
