Etymology[edit]
A transliteration of Sanskrit मौर्य (maurya), originally an adjective from the noun मयूर (mayūra, “peacock”), ultimately borrowed from Proto-Dravidian *mayVr. This is widely known as the surname of the rulers of the Mauryan Empire.
