Borrowed from Ancient Greek Μεγαβάτης (Megabátēs), itself from Old Persian *𐎲𐎥𐎱𐎠𐎫 (*Baga-pāta-, literally Protected by the gods) or Old Iranian *Bagapāta- (literally protected by God).
