Etymology[edit]
From either Old English midd (“middle”) + Old English ford (“ford”), thus "the middle ford", or from Old English (ġe)mȳthe (“a stream junction”) + Old English ford (“ford”), "the meeting ford", to denote the village situated where the rivers Font and Wansbeck meet.
