Chaozhou

[edit]

@The dog2, do you have a source for Chaozhou? 潮·普双言语词典 tells me that 學話 means 搬脣遞舌. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:11, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: From 林倫倫's video. [1] (7:57) The dog2 (talk) 01:26, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: I can't understand the example he gives, but I hear 打小報告 at the end, which makes me think it might have a negative meaning, as described in 潮·普双言语词典. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 01:38, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, he was saying it refers to passing on what someone else said. I get the feeling it has negative connotations too. Maybe Austin Zhang can weigh in as a native speaker. The dog2 (talk) 02:23, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2: I think it just means liiterally: to intimate someone's words, which is kind of like what the video said, when you intimate someone's words you're usually passing it to someone else. And yes, it's a bit dissaproving. I'd say the word 學話 is kind of like 鸚鵡學舌 in Mandarin. --Austin Zhang (talk) 03:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Austin Zhang: Thanks for your explanation. So that would mean we shouldn't have 學話 in this module as a synonym of 傳話, right? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 04:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: Speaking of which, it looks like the term 學話 is in Taiwanese Hokkien too. See [2]. Should we make a change to the definition then? The dog2 (talk) 05:38, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@The dog2, Austin Zhang: I've updated 學話 to cover the senses found in some Taiwanese dictionaries (台日大辭典, Embree台英辭典, Maryknoll台英辭典 and of course MoE's dictionary) and 潮·普双言语词典. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 07:57, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
