巴剎 = 菜市場

@Justinrleung: I don't know. Singaporeans will say "我要去巴剎買菜。", while someone from China will say "我要去市場買菜。". And while it's certainly less commonly used that way, you can go to 巴剎 to buy clothes for instance. We don't really have street markets in Singapore anymore because the government forced them to relocate into sheltered premises in the 1970s, but a street market that sells clothes can be called 巴剎. But that said, if you're talking about the "stock market" or "commodities markets", it's still 市場 in Singapore, and likewise, if you're talking about "the market" as an academic concept from economics, it is also 市場. @The dog2: I don't think we should include those financial contexts since they're a bit more abstract. In HK Cantonese, we wouldn't use 市場 for places where we get groceries (other than supermarkets 超級市場). We'd use 街市 if you're talking about a wet market (even if they're sheltered). @Justinrleung: Yeah, 巴剎 tends to refer more to wet markets. A supermarket would be 超級市場 or 超市. We do learn the term 市場 for a grocery market in school, but nobody uses it in daily speech except in financial contexts. The dog2 (talk) 22:42, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Guangzhou Cantonese

Currently 市場 or 菜市場 are more common, while 街市 tends to refer to some renovated, "upgraded" markets (somewhere between a wet market and a supermarket). --H₂NCH₂COOH (Talk) 15:34, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
