[edit]- In obsolete use Oost-Indië, particularly in the forms Oost-Indiën and Oost-Indien, was treated as a plurale tantum that generally took the definite article de. Cf. the plural in English East Indies, French Indes orientales and several other European languages; cf. German Ostindien for the use as a neuter singular.
